Step By Step Guide To Test Amplifier Output With Multimeter:
In this tutorial, I’ll show you step by step how to measure signal strength (output) with a multimeter.
This may be helpful for those who want to do the same. This method works well with analog devices and not digital ones.
This method involves a simple voltage divider circuit to measure the output of an amplifier.
STEP 1. Cut A Piece Of Wire And Attach It To The Output Of Your Amplifier:
If you are going to test an audio amplifier, attach it to the positive terminal.
If you are going to test an RF amplifier, attach it to the negative terminal.
STEP 2. Connect The Other End Of Your Wire To A 1 M Resistor:
We are going to use this part as the “divider” part of our circuit.
The resistor is used to make sure that we don’t overload your multimeter (it has a maximum input current of 1 A).
STEP 3. Attach A Multimeter Set To Measure Volts (V):
Now, plug your multimeter into the input socket on your multimeter.
You’ll notice that you can measure voltage using a voltmeter, but not with a digital multimeter.
STEP 4. Power Up Your Amplifier:
Measure the voltage of your multimeter when your amplifier is not powered on.

Remove the wire from your amplifier and connect it to your multimeter.

Easy Guide To Test Amplifier Output With Multimeter:
Here I’m going to show you how to make your amp sound good by testing your volume control with a multimeter. It’s very easy and takes less than 30 minutes to do.
First of all, you’ll need an
- Old audio-jack cord (or any other high quality 3.5mm cable)
- A multimeter
- A screwdriver
- Audio jack cable
- Electrical tape
- A good amount of patience
After gathering all the equipment, follow the steps that we have mentioned below.
- Take the Audio jack cable and pull the tip right to the center of the jack.
- Wrap the tip in electrical tape and press the tip firmly to the center. This will prevent any unwanted signals from getting through.
- Turn on your multimeter. You can use any type of multimeter, but I prefer the ones with variable resistance as they are very accurate.
- Press the red + button on your multimeter and set it to volts DC. The scale on most multimeters will read from 0-10V.
- Connect one end of the audio jack cord to the red + side of your multimeter. Connect the other end to a point where the sound is best heard (your amplifier’s power supply is perfect for this).
- Place a speaker or headphones at this other end and turn on your amplifier.
- Check the voltage reading on your multimeter. If it reads too low you’ll need to increase the power supply’s current.
- Increase the current until you reach your desired volume level.
- Repeat steps 3-8 until you have reached your desired volume level. This will give you the best settings for your amplifier.

Since multimeters aren’t much used by themselves, most people prefer to have one paired with another. So when you have an amplifier you should check how loud it is using it.
